Airborne 2020 (English)
Last year in Ede we commemorated the 75th Airborne on the Ginkel Heath. With 100,000+ visitors, the turnout that day was enormous. We are still grateful for everyone's attendance. The Airborne landings and commemoration were made extra special by the royal visit of HRH the Prince of Wales and HRH Princess Beatrix. In addition, there were about 20 Market Garden veterans present as guest of honor, to pay tribute to their comrades who served in 1944.
This year we are commemorating 75 years of freedom in the Netherlands, though in an adapted form due to the corona pandemic. The commemoration on the Ginkel Heath will take place in a closed setting and by invitation only. Unfortunately, it is not available for visitors. The air drops and the public program are also canceled. Our Polish and British veterans, flag bearers and relatives will not be present this year, they will be missed.
It is possible to follow the commemoration live via www.omroepgelderland.nl on Saturday September 19 around 11:00h (AMS time). If you would like to follow the YouTube transmission and add the automatic translation, we suggest you follow the live stream.
Though the traditional Airborne commemoration and events may be canceled, we have worked hard on an alternative program. There are several (outdoor) exhibitions, a booklet was made for the children of the local secondary schools. And we ask all residents to commemorate the Battle of the Ginkel Heath and Operation Market Garden from home by raising the Airborne flag. Most of the program elements are located in the municipality of Ede, which makes it difficult for our international visitors to attend. Below you will find a short description of the alternative program.
Follow our Facebook page for updates. Due to the corona measures some parts of the current program and (broadcast of the) commemoration may be subject to change.
Although our veterans will not be present at the commemoration in Ede this year, they are not forgotten. They will receive a personal message from the mayors of the four Airborne municipalities in September.
This year, we focus on the stories of veterans from now and back then. For example of Brigade General John Hackett during Operation Market Garden and Corporal of the First Class Mert Oygur, currently serving in the Dutch Air Brigade and a veteran.
Did you know that one of the para’s during the landings in 1944 was French? How did he end up in the plane, what’s his story? Or what about the local Lunteren resident who was a part of the British Airborne troops, how did that happen? We share their stories on our Airborne Facebook, in several exhibitions and in the local Airborne newspaper (Dutch only).
If you would like to read more about Operation Market Garden, go to our History page.
Anyone interested in buying the local Airborne Ede flag of the Airborne regiments flag can visit www.airborneherdenking.nl. The municipality of Ede has donated flags to the local schools, elderly homes and museums in honor of our veterans. We will always remember them.
Missions “Then and Now”
One of the men who jumped on the Ginkel Heath on September 18 was Brigade General John Hackett. In 1943, he was placed in charge of the 4th Parachute Brigade, part of the 1st Airborne Division, which, among other things, jumped above the Ginkel Heath near Ede. The exhibition poses the story of the late General John Hackett and Operation Market Garden with that of current Corporal of the First Class Mert Oygur and the missions of his Dutch 11 Air Brigade. Corporal Oygur has also experienced combat situations during his deployments in Afghanistan and Iraq. In the stories you will see photos from then and now.
The exhibition can be seen at three different locations in Ede:
- Now on display at the Ginkel Heath next to the landmark. (maps LINK)
- In September you can view the exhibition in shops in the center of Ede. The participating retailers mark their store with recognizable Airborne attributes. General information about the exhibition and the route can be found on a large sign at the Old Church.
- In September in movie theater Pathé Ede
Outdoor exhibition "Freedom"
In the garden of the Nature Center Veluwe there is an exhibition of more than 20 works by artist Salman Ezzammoury. The theme is "Freedom: celebrate, commemorate and pass on". Ezzammoury drew inspiration from a quote by Mahatma Gandhi: "Freedom is not worthwhile if it does not give the freedom to wander".
This exhibition can be visited from September 1 to November 30 between sunrise and sunset
Address: Nature Garden, Nature Center Veluwe, Groot Ginkelseweg 2a, Ede.
Art exhibition "Commemorate in Freedom"
"Commemorate in Freedom" is the theme of the Airborne exhibition at the Stingerbol. About 15 experienced artists, including some artists from the Platform Edese Kunstenaars (PEK), show their work. Admission costs are 3 euros. Tickets may be booked online.
Address: De Stingerbol is located on the former barracks site, Nieuwe Kazernelaan Ede.
